Rough Green Snakes are common throughout Harris County, but are not commonly seen. This is because of their bright green coloration, which is excellent camouflage in the foliage of green shrubs and trees. Many people call these 'Garden' or 'Grass' snakes, but this is not a valid name for this beautiful little serpent. Adults can be up to 3 feet or so in length.

Rough Green Snakes have one interesting behavior which sometimes helps people to take notice of them. They have learned that branches often sway in the breeze, and will mimic this action. Imagine your surprise when you look at that prized rose bush in your yard on a calm summer day, and notice one small green twig in the center moving back and forth as if the wind is blowing!
Another gardener's friend, these harmless snakes eat lots of insects, especially the ones that chew up your plants. You decide what's better - chewed up plants or Rough Green Snakes!
